Chris Wiersma

Chris Wiersma graduated from the University of Amsterdam with degrees in Media & Culture (B.A.), Law (LL.B.) and in Information Law (LL.M.). As a graduate student, he now writes a PhD-dissertation on socio-legal aspects of freedom of speech adjudication on harmful and illegal newsgathering. His PhD-supervisor is Professor Dirk Voorhoof (CJS). Chris currently is appointed full-time at the Department of Communication Sciences at the University of Ghent (UGent) as assisting academic staff member, mainly on the second-year BSc. course Media Law, previous and current seminars Communication Sciences – second and third year – and he provides general support for guidance of students’ master thesis (related as well to Journalism Ethics). Chris is also graduate associate at the Human Rights Centre (HRC), UGent. The main fields of his academic writing and research go out to Information Law, Constitutional Settlement of Rights & the Study of Public Administration, International Copyright, and Cultural History & Modern Cultural Criticism. The intersection of the humanities, science and education is another main interest of Chris.
